Frequently asked questions

Is HostCraft free?

Yes. Every feature is free. The app shows a few small, clearly labelled ads. If you'd like it ad-free, a one-off £5 or more on Ko-fi removes them forever. Open Support HostCraft in the app and enter your Ko-fi email.

What do I need?

A Windows 10 or 11 PC and a copy of Minecraft: Java Edition to play. Each server needs about 150–250 MB of disk space, plus your world as it grows. For RAM, see How much RAM does a Minecraft server need? You do not need to install Java: HostCraft downloads a private copy for each server.

Is it safe? Windows warned me about it.

Windows shows "Windows protected your PC" for apps from small developers that aren't code-signed yet. Click More info → Run anyway. HostCraft only downloads server files from official sources (Mojang, PaperMC, FabricMC, PurpurMC, Eclipse Adoptium for Java, Modrinth and GeyserMC), and checks downloads against their published checksums where those are available.

Which server type should I pick?

If you're not sure, choose Paper. It's fast, stable and supports plugins. Our Paper vs Fabric vs Vanilla guide explains the differences.

How do my friends join?

Can Bedrock, phone or console players join?

Yes, with Geyser and Floodgate, which HostCraft can install for you. See our crossplay guide.

Does my PC need to stay on?

Yes. The server runs on your PC, so it's only online while your PC is on and HostCraft (or start.bat) is running it. If you want it online 24/7, a rented Minecraft server from a hosting company is the usual answer.

Do I need to accept the Minecraft EULA?

Yes. Mojang requires everyone who runs a server to agree to the Minecraft EULA. HostCraft asks you to tick the box yourself and never accepts it on your behalf.

Where are my server files?

In a normal folder, by default Documents\Minecraft Servers\<your server>. It contains the world, settings, backups, a start.bat to run the server without the app, and a START HERE.html guide. You can move or back up the whole folder.

Can I import a server I already have?

Yes. On the home screen, choose Import existing folder and pick the folder with your server's .jar file.

Do I need an account?

No. HostCraft has no accounts or sign-in, and doesn't track you. See the privacy policy.

I donated but ads are still showing.

Use the same email as your Ko-fi account, and allow a few minutes after donating. Donations add up, so £3 + £2 works. If it still doesn't unlock, email [email protected] with your Ko-fi email and roughly when you donated.

Is HostCraft made by Mojang?

No. HostCraft is an independent app. It's not an official Minecraft product, and it's not approved by or associated with Mojang or Microsoft.
